Google Consent Mode

Consentico automatically configures Google Consent Mode v2. Here's what that means for your store.

Quick Answer

You don't need to do anything. If you use Google Analytics or Google Ads, Consentico handles Consent Mode automatically. Your conversion tracking keeps working even when visitors decline cookies.

Google Consent Mode lets Google Analytics and Google Ads work even when visitors decline cookies. Instead of losing that data entirely, Google:

  • Sends anonymous pings when consent is denied
  • Uses those pings to estimate the conversions you would have seen
  • Fills in the gaps in your analytics reports

This means you stay compliant AND keep your conversion data.

What Consentico does for you

When a visitor lands on your store:

  1. Before they choose — Google gets a "consent denied" signal and runs in cookieless mode
  2. If they accept — Google gets a "consent granted" signal and runs normally
  3. If they decline — Google stays in cookieless mode, but still estimates conversions

You don't configure anything. It just works.

This is the setup Google recommends for GDPR compliance. Consentico implements it exactly.

How do I know it's working?

The easiest way to check:

Even easier

Install Google Tag Assistant and it will show you the consent state directly.

Do I need to change anything in Google Analytics?

No. Consentico sends the consent signals automatically. Your existing GA4 setup will receive them.

What about Google Ads?

Same thing — automatic. Your conversion tracking will show "Consent Mode active" in the Google Ads diagnostics.

To verify: Google Ads → Tools & Settings → Conversions → Diagnostics

Look for:

  • ✅ Consent Mode active
  • ✅ Consent Mode v2 signals received

Basic vs Advanced mode

Consentico offers two modes in Settings → Integrations → Google Consent Mode:

ModeWhat happensBest for
Advanced (default)Google loads immediately in cookieless mode, then upgrades after consentMost stores — you get conversion modeling
BasicGoogle is fully blocked until consentStores with strict legal requirements

Advanced mode is recommended. It's what Google designed Consent Mode for — you get the compliance benefits AND the conversion modeling.

I use Google Tag Manager

If you manage your tags through GTM instead of adding them directly to Shopify:

I don't have Google Analytics

That's fine. Consent Mode signals are sent anyway, but they don't do anything without Google tags listening. There's no downside to leaving it on — if you add Google Analytics later, it'll just work.
